Making A Sample Of My Final Gift Box Design

After a visit to Paper Chase on Friday to supply myself with card that is suitable to make gift box's, i wanted to have a trial run with the idea that i had come up with. This was to have the lid attached to the bottom of the box and opens upwards by lifting it and then to find a surprise inside with a 3D laser cut design sat off the lid but sits inside when the lid is closed.

Here are some pictures with how i got on, with a little help from my dad.

This is the net of the bottom of the box. As you can see there are no flaps on to hold the box together. I have done this deliberately. After closely observing the box design i purchased from John Lewis, it seems that the box is held together by the paper covering it. This is how i plan to construct mine as it makes it look a lot neater. I also need to remember at this stage why the box is flat to apply the inside lining paper.

Here the bottom has been made, it is the cardboard box sat on top of the white ones. The edges where the card has been scored were slightly rough so i intend to use a lightly graded sandpaper to rub over these. Also We were measuring the dimensions on the lid to where the extra piece will be applied holding my laser cut design.

This is a piece of paper we just used to demonstrate what the piece of my laser cut design will be like in net form. This laser cut piece will be attached to the card on the picture above. This is a picture below. I need to consider at this point if i would like the background card to be covered in plain paper on a design as it will be seen through the gaps of the laser cut design above it.

As you can see the left image above then shows the card with the laser cut design piece attached to the lid and then the left picture shows how it will look together.

Im really glad i did this i feel more confident now about making them, the most difficult part will be getting the design i create to sit where i want it to and then applying the paper design onto the box.
